DNFD is a fault diagnostician for an electric power distribution network with inverse-time protection. The basic diagnosis rules for DNFD can locate a fault within one or two nodes. Cases where the basic rules fail to locate the exact faulted element can be used by the system to elicit further information about the characteristics of the fault. This additional information is used in future diagnoses. DNFD uses breaker states and SCADA sequence-of-event data as its input, and has knowledge of the static topology of the distribution network.
